Built in the sixties, and you can tell from the housing
Buitenveldert was drawn up by city planner Cornelis van Eesteren and went up at speed from the late 1950s onwards. Right in the middle of that building period came the winter of 1962–63: the harshest winter of the last century, with weeks of frost and the last Elfstedentocht of its generation. Construction stood still, schedules slipped, and the lost time was made up in a hurry afterwards.
What you find in Buitenveldert today is only partly down to that. The main reason walls and glazing insulate poorly here is simply that no insulation requirements existed at the time, those did not arrive until the late 1970s. Anyone living here knows the result: cold external walls, single or early double glazing, and an energy bill that climbs faster than it needs to.
