Amsterdam West: from nineteenth-century streets to generous city parks
West mixes lively city culture, characterful nineteenth-century building and a creative streak. You will find the Westerpark with the Westergasfabriek, the Rembrandtpark, and the Vondelpark right on the edge. Whether you settle on a terrace along the Kinkerstraat, walk the Bilderdijkstraat or take in the façades on the De Clercqstraat and the Jan Pieter Heijestraat, there is little chance of being bored.
Living in Oud-West, De Baarsjes and Bos en Lommer
From Oud-West and the Helmersbuurt to De Baarsjes and Bos en Lommer, the streets are full of characterful buildings and typically Amsterdam speculative housing. As in De Pijp or the Jordaan, that construction brings its own work: walls out of true, dated pipework, or simply the wish to lay out a compact city flat more sensibly.
A little further out lie the Westelijke Tuinsteden, Slotermeer, Geuzenveld, Slotervaart and Osdorp, today the Nieuw-West district. There the picture is reversed: roomy post-war walk-up and gallery flats with plenty of light and greenery, where the work is mostly kitchens, bathrooms and window frames due for replacement.
