Amsterdam East: nineteenth-century streets, garden villages and new-build side by side
East is one of the most mixed parts of the city. Around the Oosterpark and the Dapper market, nineteenth-century housing stands close together; a little further out, in the Watergraafsmeer, people live more spaciously and have gardens. And around Oostpoort and Amstel station, a good deal has been built in recent years.
This is where you find Artis and the Tropenmuseum, the Javastraat and the Linnaeusstraat, and in Betondorp one of the first experiments with concrete housing in the Netherlands. That is East in a nutshell: building years decades apart, sometimes within the same street.
Every building year brings its own work
For maintenance, that difference matters. In the older streets around the Oosterpark and the Dapperbuurt, the work is in woodwork, plaster, window frames and pipework that has had its day. In the Watergraafsmeer it is more often gardens, fencing, dormers and extensions. And in the new-build at Oostpoort it is about finishing: curtain rails on tall windows, made-to-measure cupboards, lighting.
